The AEA R88 Mk2 sets the standard for dual passive ribbon microphones, delivering exceptional sound reproduction. To achieve optimum performance, the preamp plays a critical role, requiring a gain of at least +60dB and a very high impedance. This is consistent with the requirements for all passive ribbon mics.

For guaranteed and consistent full-range ribbon sound, AEA recommends utilizing their specially designed preamps such as the RPQ2, RPQ500, and TRP2. These preamps are tailored to complement the unique characteristics of ribbon microphones. However, for louder instruments like guitar amps, preamps with an impedance above 5K ohms, commonly found in many live soundboards, are deemed sufficient. In scenarios involving quiet sound sources or distant recording, opting for an AEA preamp is highly advisable to ensure optimal performance.
