Royer SF-24: Phantom-Powered Stereo Ribbon Microphone

The Royer SF-24 is a phantom-powered stereo ribbon microphone, a refined version of the popular SF-12 stereo ribbon microphone. It inherits the SF-12’s exceptional audio performance, stereo separation, and imaging while introducing an exclusive active electronics system designed for ribbon microphones. The SF-24’s output of -38 dB surpasses its non-powered counterpart, the SF-12, by a significant 14 dB, placing its sensitivity on par with phantom-powered condenser microphones. The microphone’s unique electronics and custom-designed FETs ensure ultra-quiet operation with self-noise lower than 18 dB.

The Royer SF-24 stands as a versatile stereo ribbon microphone with enhanced sensitivity, making it a powerful tool for a broad range of recording applications. Whether capturing the nuances of acoustic instruments or delivering realistic stereo imaging, the SF-24 excels in delivering high-quality audio reproduction.

Key Features

  • Phantom-Powered Stereo Design: Integrates phantom-powered active electronics into a stereo ribbon microphone setup, delivering superior sensitivity and versatility.
  • Coincident Pair in Blumlein Configuration: Similar to the SF-12, the SF-24 comprises two matched ribbon microphones arranged in a Blumlein configuration for outstanding stereo imaging.
  • Dual 1.8-Micron Ribbons: Incorporates two 1.8-micron ribbons, each weighing approximately 1/3 milligram, contributing to superb transient response and a wide, uniform frequency response.
  • Magnet/Pole Piece Structures: Ensures a consistent frequency response without substantial peaks or dips.
  • Ingot Iron Case: Minimizes leakage flux and enhances sensitivity in a compact form.
  • Y Adapter with Separate XLR Connectors: Comes with an extension cable featuring a Y adapter that splits into separate 3-pin male XLR connectors for each capsule.
  • High SPL capabilities and extremely low residual noise.
  • Ribbon elements are not affected by heat or humidity.
  • Consistent frequency response regardless of distance.

Recording Applications

  • Stereo Recordings: Excels in creating realistic stereo recordings, capturing both the instrument and the acoustical space. Ideal for classical piano, drum overheads, ensemble and orchestral recordings, percussion instruments, acoustic instruments, vocal ensembles, and choirs.
  • Mono Recording: Offers excellent phase compatibility between its two sides, allowing for mono recording without introducing undesirable phase artifacts.
  • Individual Mono Use: Either side can be used individually as a mono microphone.
  • Various instrumental and vocal applications, enhancing flexibility in recording setups.
  • Acoustic Operating Principle: Electrodynamic pressure gradient with active electronics.
  • Polar Pattern: Crossed figure-8’s.
  • Generating Element: 1.8-micron aluminum ribbon.
  • Frequency Response: 40-15,000 Hz +/- 2dB.
  • Sensitivity: -38 dB (re. 1v/pa +/-1dB).
  • Self-Noise: < 18 dB.
  • Output Impedance: 200 Ohms.
  • Rated Load Impedance: 1K-Ohm.
  • Maximum SPL: >130dB.
  • Output Connector: Male XLR 5 pin (stereo*).
  • Power Requirements: 48-Volt Phantom Only.
  • Supply Current: 4 mA per channel.
