The Shelford Channel represents the culmination of over fifty years of sonic legacy, distilling the essence of Rupert Neve’s most iconic console modules into a single, high-performance rack unit. By combining the company’s first new transformer-gain Class-A microphone preamplifier in over forty years with a “best-of-the-classics” inductor EQ and a punchy diode bridge compressor, the Shelford Channel provides the definitive vintage sound refined for the modern era. Operating at twice the voltage of original vintage designs, this channel strip delivers incredible headroom and a whisper-quiet noise floor while maintaining the soulful, musical character that defined the 1073, 1064, and 2254.
Transformer-Gain Mic Preamp: Unlike modern preamps that use a standard gain-block approach, the Shelford Channel utilizes a custom input transformer that provides the first 15dB of gain. This directly-coupled design produces a bold, recognizable character that captures the spirit of early Little Shelford designs.
Best-of-the-Classics Inductor EQ: The 3-band EQ is a hybrid of legendary topologies. The low-frequency band provides the creamy response of the 1064, the mid-band is based on the world-renowned 1073 for sweetening vocals, and the high-frequency band uses a blend of vintage and modern circuitry for enhanced control.
Diode Bridge Compressor: Based on the legendary 2254, this compressor delivers the weighty, harmonically rich tonality required to push vocals and instruments to the front of a mix. Rupert Neve Designs modernized the circuit with a significantly lower noise floor and expanded timing constants for 21st-century flexibility.
Variable Silk and Texture: The variable Silk Red and Blue circuits allow for precise tuning of harmonic content in the output stage. Silk Red enhances highs and high-mids for added sparkle, while Silk Blue beefs up the lows and low-mids for a denser, more powerful sound.
Dual-Tap Transformer Output: The custom output transformer features both a standard MAIN output and a -6dBu output. This enables engineers to fully drive the Shelford’s Class-A circuitry for maximum saturation without clipping the input of a digital interface.
High-Z Direct Input: The front-panel DI uses the same topology as the industry-leading RNDI, providing unparalleled clarity and a smooth high-end for guitars, basses, and synthesizers.
Higher Voltage Rails: By utilizing +/- 24V rails, the Shelford Channel offers nearly double the operating voltage of vintage modules, resulting in massive headroom and superior dynamic range.
