Rupert Neve Designs MBT: Master Bus Transformer

Overview: The Ultimate Tool for Musical Coloration

The Master Bus Transformer (MBT) is a comprehensive stereo processor designed to provide an incredible array of flavorful options to sweeten, enhance, drive, and utterly transform source material. Built upon six decades of Rupert Neve’s transformer-based design philosophy, the MBT is packed with bespoke transformers and Class-A circuitry. It serves as the definitive analog solution for engineers looking to add life, depth, and three-dimensional character to full mixes, stems, or individual groups.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Musical 2-Band Shelf EQ: This all-new EQ section features three octave ranges with gentle slopes and minimal phase shifts. It is designed for elegant tonal enhancement, allowing for smooth high-end air and powerful low-end weight that interacts beautifully with the following stages.

  • Opto-Based Color Comp: The Color Comp utilizes an all-new optical design that accentuates non-linear distortion to bring a sense of depth to the signal. It features two selectable ratios, a sweepable high-pass sidechain filter, and a blend control for effortless parallel compression.

  • Enhanced Width Section: Inspired by the award-winning Master Buss Processor, the MBT’s Width section is additive-only with a greater range for extreme operation. A variable high-pass filter (50Hz to 800Hz) ensures the stereo spread stays focused by keeping low frequencies centered.

  • Introduction of Super Silk: The next evolution of the beloved Silk circuit, Super Silk features independent Red, Blue, Harmonics, and Zener Drive controls. This allows for unprecedented manipulation of even and odd-order harmonics, ranging from subtle vintage sheen to aggressive saturation.

  • Zener Drive Saturation: This diode-based soft-clip circuit introduces a more aggressive tonality as the MBT approaches clipping, providing a “punk rock” edge that helps tracks feel louder and more cohesive without damaging peaks.

  • Class-A Makeup Gain: With 20dB of high-headroom Class-A gain, the MBT ensures that the signal remains vibrant and punchy even after heavy compression or tonal shaping.

  • Custom Transformer Saturation: By adjusting the gain into and out of the Super Silk circuit, Rupert Neve Designs allows the user to precisely control how hard the custom output transformers are driven for maximum harmonic character.
