SSL Bus Comp Classic

The SSL Bus Comp Classic returns the Solid State Logic Bus Compressor to a dedicated 1U hardware format, faithful to the sound and workflow of the original design while expanding its creative range through Variable VCA Drive, extended ratio and time constant options, and a genuine stereo external sidechain input. At its core are high-performance THAT 2181 VCAs paired with the distinctive SSL sidechain architecture — incorporating a VCA in its feedback loop — that produces the combination of punch, cohesion, and musicality that has made the SSL Bus Compressor a fixture of professional mixbus processing for more than five decades. Variable VCA Drive adds a continuously variable control that moves from the balanced VCA configuration and low-distortion clarity of SSL’s SuperAnalogue designs through the harmonic character of the FX384 and 4000 Series consoles, reaching up to 10% THD for aggressive, saturated compression character. Precision six-position stepped controls for Ratio, Attack, Release, and Sidechain HPF preserve the speed and repeatability of the original SSL workflow, while SSL Auto Release — a programme-dependent, two-stage release circuit — provides a natural, musical dynamic response suited to complex stereo program material.

Key Features

  • Authentic SSL Bus Compressor circuit — THAT 2181 VCAs with SSL sidechain architecture — high-performance THAT 2181 VCAs in the audio path, paired with the SSL sidechain topology that incorporates a VCA in its feedback loop; together, they produce the distinctive character of the original SSL Bus Compressor — punch, movement, and cohesion with transients that remain defined under gain reduction, and a way of drawing multiple mix elements into a unified, breathing whole
  • Variable VCA Drive — SuperAnalogue clarity to 4000 Series saturation — a continuously variable control that unlocks decades of SSL console character from a single knob; at the clean end, the VCAs operate in a balanced configuration for the low-distortion transparency and powerful transient response of SSL’s SuperAnalogue generation, as found in the 9000 Series, Oracle, and Odyssey consoles; activating the control shifts the VCAs to an unbalanced configuration, introducing the harmonic behavior and character of the FX384 and 4000 Series; increasing it further progressively adds colour and saturation through to the denser, more aggressive attitude of early 4K designs; capable of up to 10% THD for heavily driven drum processing and parallel compression
  • Precision six-position stepped controls — Ratio, Attack, and Release — the familiar SSL Ratio, Attack, and Release settings are presented as precision stepped controls for fast operation, accurate recall, and repeatable results across sessions; expanded Ratio and Release options extend the compressor’s range beyond the classic settings while preserving the immediacy of the original workflow; each Ratio setting has its own defined compression behaviour — the 2:1 mode features a soft-knee response for transparent mix bus processing; higher ratios deliver progressively assertive control and density for stems, drum busses, and parallel chains
  • SSL Auto Release — programme-dependent two-stage release circuitry — Auto Release is not simply a fast release time; its two-stage, programme-dependent circuit releases louder program elements more quickly while allowing quieter material to recover more gradually, producing a natural, musical dynamic character with retained movement and detail; particularly effective on complex mix bus and full-program material where a fixed release time would otherwise be difficult to set
  • Six-position Sidechain High-Pass Filter — reduces the influence of low-frequency content on the detector circuit; with bass-heavy sources such as kick drums and bass instruments attenuated in the sidechain, gain reduction across the rest of the mix remains controlled and even, while low-end depth and impact are preserved; precision stepped for consistent recall between sessions
  • Genuine stereo external sidechain input — enables both creative sidechain processing and advanced stem delivery workflows; when printing individual stems, the full mix can feed the sidechain while each stem passes separately through the audio path, so every stem receives the same gain-reduction behaviour it experienced in the complete mix; helps preserve the balance and movement of the approved mix across alternate versions and deliverables
  • 1U rackmount format — designed and built by SSL — the Bus Comp Classic is housed in a dedicated 1U rackmount chassis, purpose-built for the compressor rather than adapted from a channel-strip or multi-unit format; designed and manufactured by Solid State Logic
