Thermionic Culture Phoenix SB Stereo Valve Compressor

The Thermionic Culture Phoenix SB is the current standard production version of the classic Phoenix compressor, combining the original circuit design with the side chain filter controls previously introduced on the Phoenix SC model and the addition of an HT Standby switch. The Phoenix is well regarded for its smooth soft-knee variable-mu compression—a character that controls dynamic range without the sense of gain reduction commonly associated with faster-responding designs. Used gently, it adds a natural warmth and control to vocals, individual instruments, or a full mix; pushed harder, it produces musically useful harmonic distortion and higher-ratio compression. A notable behavior: when operated in standby mode (the unit still passes audio), a symmetrical distortion occurs that some users compare to the character of overloaded analogue tape.

Key Features

  • Variable-mu soft-knee compression — smooth, natural-sounding compression with a characteristic that does not impose an obvious ceiling on the signal; suitable for transparent dynamic control as well as more aggressive processing
  • HT Standby switch — puts the Phoenix into a low-power standby mode designed to extend the life of the valves and capacitors; audio still passes with standby on; useful when warming up the unit or during downtime; when operated in standby, a symmetrical tape-type distortion is produced
  • Side chain bass cut filters — cuts compression response below 150Hz or 300Hz per channel; with stereo link engaged, filters operate at the average of the two sides, giving 5 effective frequency options for steering compression trigger response
  • Stereo link switch — links both channels for true stereo compression
  • Front-panel meter zero trim controls — accessible without tools for easy calibration; both meters should read 0 when off standby and not compressing
  • Classic Phoenix circuit — the same well-established compression topology used in studios and mastering suites worldwide
