Z&H Designs VCA Compressor

The Z&H Designs VCA Compressor is a flagship dynamics processor engineered for mixbus, group, and stem compression, combining the cohesion-forward “glue” character of British-style bus compression with the transient-focused punch of classic American VCA designs — both accessible via a front-panel Glue/FWD mode switch. The proprietary transformer-coupled Colour Module operates independently from the compression circuit, delivering ultra-clean dynamics below 0.005% THD+N when bypassed, or smoothly variable transformer saturation up to 1% when engaged, driven by a matched pair of classic American transformers in a purpose-built Z&H Designs circuit. Spark and Boom feedback circuits — derived directly from the transformer windings — add organic 10 kHz air and 120 Hz weight respectively, offering a tonal response distinct from conventional equalization. Precision-matched modern VCA chips, premium BC resistors, and Panasonic capacitors throughout, combined with a meticulously engineered power supply and final sign-off by two mixing engineers before each unit ships, give the Z&H Designs VCA Compressor mastering-grade technical performance in a boutique-built package.

Key Features

  • Glue/FWD mode switch — British glue or American punch — Glue mode delivers the smooth, cohesive compression of classic British-style bus compressors, ideal for mixbus and group buss applications where blend and polish are the priority; FWD mode shifts to a forward, transient-focused American VCA response for drums, pianos, and stem work where presence and punch take precedence; both modes respond to parallel Mix control for blended compression at any ratio
  • Transformer-coupled Colour Module — independently switchable saturation stage driven by a matched pair of classic American transformers in a purpose-built Z&H Designs circuit; with the module bypassed, the unit operates at ultra-clean distortion below 0.005% THD+N; engaging the module adds continuously variable transformer harmonic saturation from 0.001% to 1%, dialing in subtle warmth, density, or full transformer colour without affecting the compression circuit; functions as an inline saturation tool independent of the dynamics stage
  • Spark & Boom feedback circuits — Spark adds air and presence at 10 kHz; Boom adds weight and foundation at 120 Hz; both are derived from the transformer winding feedback rather than conventional equalization, producing a subtle, organic shift in tonal character that responds differently from DSP or standard analog EQ; continuously variable and independently bypassable
  • Tilt & HP sidechain filters — shape the detection signal feeding the compressor’s gain reduction circuit; Tilt filter adjusts the sidechain frequency balance for frequency-conscious compression that responds differently to lows and highs; HP filter reduces low-frequency content from the detection signal to prevent bass-heavy material from driving excessive gain reduction; essential tools for precise control over how the compressor reacts to the program
  • Expanded attack & release controls — extended range of attack and release time constants for precise control over transient response and gain reduction behavior; slower attacks allow transients to pass before compression engages for punch and presence; faster settings catch transients for controlled, dense dynamics; independently adjustable for each compression mode
  • Soft-knee toggle — switches between hard-knee compression for precise threshold control and soft-knee operation for gradual, transparent onset of gain reduction across a range near the threshold; soft-knee especially useful for mixbus and mastering contexts where abrupt compression behavior is undesirable
  • Parallel Mix control — blends the fully compressed signal with the dry uncompressed signal directly within the hardware, enabling New York-style parallel compression without external routing; combine FWD mode with the Mix control on the mixbus for a full-bodied lift that retains the dynamics of the unprocessed signal
  • Auto Fade (analog VCA-based) — true analog Auto Fade function built into the compressor’s VCA circuit; provides a smooth, controlled fade-out with a single switch and level control without requiring DAW automation or additional hardware; a feature once standard on classic British consoles, now integrated into the Z&H Designs circuit
  • Mastering-grade technical specifications — ultra-low distortion below 0.005% THD+N; noise floor below –100 dBu (band-limited, 22 Hz–22 kHz); maximum output level above +29 dBu; IMD below 0.008%; frequency response ±0.5 dB from 15 Hz to 30 kHz; universal power supply (110–250 VAC)
  • Boutique build quality — verified by two mixing engineers before shipping — precision-matched modern VCA chips for consistent low-distortion performance; premium BC resistors and Panasonic capacitors throughout; meticulous power supply design and PCB layout; each unit is tested and signed off by two mixing engineers and every craftsman involved in its assembly before it leaves the facility
