STRENGTH & CONTROL

The Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor Providence Edition represents a shared pursuit
of craftsmanship, tone, and uncompromising signal integrity.

After nearly two decades as one of the most respected dynamics processors in professional mastering rooms, the Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor has evolved.

In 2004, Infrasonic Sound Recording Company was founded by Providence CEO Jeff Ehrenberg and his former business partner Pete Lyman. The duo met Shadow Hills founder Peter Reardon when he was posting pictures of his innovative, mysterious audio equipment on the audio forums.

Pete and Jeff reached out to Peter Reardon and soon commissioned a prototype of a VCA bus compressor for Infrasonic. After many phone calls with Peter and the addition of many new features, the first Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor was born – a Class-A dual stage dynamics unit which coupled an optical and VCA compressor.

With time, a Class AB version of the Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor became available to the recording market and quickly earned its place
as one of the most coveted dynamics units in the audio industry.

Now, Ehrenberg and Reardon have teamed up once again to create a limited edition version of the Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor with a new design and additional features that unlock a new level of sonic flexibility.

The Providence Edition was born from a close collaboration between Providence Sound and Vision and Shadow Hills Industries, reimagining this modern classic with a bespoke aesthetic and a fully discrete Class A signal path that hearkens back to the original design.

The Providence Edition represents both an evolution and a return to form for the Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor.

At the heart of the Providence Edition is a fully Class A dual-stage compression architecture, which is how the very first Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor was designed. An electro-luminescent optical compressor feeds directly into a discrete Class A VCA stage, allowing for precise dynamic control with musical continuity. Compared to the standard Class A/B design, this all–Class A topology prioritizes harmonic integrity and dimensionality — particularly critical in mastering and high-resolution mix applications.

The Providence Edition also utilizes a Lundahl input transformer for a smoother, more hi-fi sound compared to the Jensen transformers deployed in most mastering compressors.

Three switchable output transformers allow for additional sonic shaping. Iron provides the gluey, larger-than-life, 1970s British sound; Steel provides the forward, punchy American sound; and Nickel is more hi-fi with an open top end.

Six ratios, six attack times, six release settings, and sidechain filtering provide comprehensive control, while ample gain allows the unit to drive tape machines or converters with authority.

One of the Providence Edition’s defining features is a hardware insert point placed directly between its two compression stages. Accessible via a front-panel toggle and rear XLR connections, this allows external EQ or processing to be integrated precisely where it matters most. Whether shaping tone between compression stages or treating each stage independently, the routing flexibility opens creative options rarely found in mastering compressors.

The insert switch takes the place of the high-pass sidechain switch found on the standard Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor. We moved the HPF sidechain to the back of the unit, which most users leave engaged consistently to limit pumping on bass-heavy material.

Each Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor Providence Edition is built specifically for its owner, with a lead time of approximately two to four weeks. Each one is fitted with a personalized nameplate, grounding every unit in the studio and engineer it was made for.
