KSD Linemaster mk2: Studio Monitor Innovation, Redefined

The KSD Linemaster mk2 isn’t just a next-generation monitor. It’s a revelation. Built on decades of innovation and refined in direct collaboration with Providence Sound and Vision CEO Jeff Ehrenberg, this reference monitor tower pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in studio playback. With a holographic soundstage and jaw-dropping clarity, the Linemaster mk2 delivers unprecedented detail, depth, and impact, especially in the low end.

When Jeff first encountered KSD, he wasn’t expecting to be impressed. Already surrounded by the best studio monitors in the world, he had little reason to believe a new contender could shake up the landscape. But KSD wasn’t new. Their FIRTEC system, a proprietary phase-linear DSP technology, was developed in 1994, and their monitors had already found success in Europe, particularly in Germany. After a visit to KSD’s headquarters in Saarbrücken, where they share a factory with high-end audiophile brand Backes & Müller, everything changed.

It was there that Jeff first heard the original Linemaster and tried to break it. He pushed it with the loudest 808s from Cardi B, Migos, and Travis Scott. While the first-generation design impressed with its resolution and control, it lacked the visceral, club-like low-end power that artists often crave in the studio. Jeff’s feedback was clear: engineers could trust it, but artists needed to feel it.

KSD listened.

Six months later, Jeff received a new design from KSD co-CEO André Hammerschmidt. What began as a discussion around software tuning turned into a hardware reimagining. Four 15-inch subwoofers were added to the Linemaster mk2, joining four 12-inch woofers to deliver immersive, phase-aligned bass with concert-level SPL and minimal distortion.

That subwoofer array is only the beginning. The 12-inch drivers are equipped with DMC Control, a patented, all-analog mechanical circuit that instantly resets the driver to a zero starting point after each transient. This ensures each bass note or kick starts clean and precisely, improving resolution in ways traditional drivers can’t replicate.

The Linemaster also incorporates KSD’s NeXT technology, which replaces the typical spherical wave with a cylindrical wave that loses far less energy over distance. The result is a tighter sweet spot, reduced room coloration, and 3dB more direct sound energy at the listening position. Even the tweeter is a cylindrical wave radiator, mistaken by many for a ribbon, enhancing the spatial accuracy and width of the stereo image.

Powering it all is over 2000 watts of amplification, calibrated via FIRTEC phase-linear filters on custom FPGA chips. Analog XLR and AES digital inputs eliminate unnecessary conversion steps, and the included Ethernet remote grants access to a linear phase six-band parametric EQ for room tuning. Coming soon, KSD will support CARMA integration for full-room analysis and automated system calibration.

For studios with limited space or budget, the Linemaster’s top cabinet can function as a standalone unit. With four 12-inch subs in stereo, it delivers massive impact and precision without the dual 15-inch sub tower, making it suitable for small to mid-sized control rooms.

As Jeff puts it, “There are many speakers that are loud. There are many that translate well. A speaker that does both is rare and something you have to hear for yourself.”
