Magic Garden Pro Evolution v.1 – The No-Compromise Monitor Package From Mastering Engineer Brian Lucey

In our latest video conversation, mastering engineer Brian Lucey joins Providence Sound & Vision’s Brian Gross to discuss the Magic Garden Pro Evolution V.1 Studio Monitor Package: a three-year collaboration that challenges conventional thinking about what professional monitoring should deliver.

After 25 years in mastering, Brian Lucey has experienced a consistent pattern: engineers send mixes that don’t quite translate, then hear everything clearly once the master comes back. Brian posits that the issue isn’t skill or sensitivity, but the monitoring.

Built On Decades OF Experience

The Evolution V.1 takes a unique approach to speaker design. Rather than using DSP to correct acoustic imperfections, the V.1 starts with physics-based speaker engineering from third-generation designer Kevin Malmgren, then adds carefully voiced components to create a complete monitoring system.

Each monitor boasts a 5.5-inch long-throw ceramic matrix midwoofer capable of 24mm of linear excursion paired with an industry-first series crossover incorporating frequency, phase, and distortion correction. This delivers three-way main monitor performance from a nearfield-sized package, with full-range response that eliminates the need for a separate subwoofer.

Every Evolution V1 undergoes rigorous pre-shipping preparation: 40 days and 1,000 hours of burn-in using 10Hz sine waves and ocean waves to ensure peak performance straight out of the box.

Voiced For Better Mixes, Faster

To create the ultimate mixing package, Brian voiced the complete package around Kevin Malmgren’s speaker design. This meant selecting and testing every component: the Class AB amplifier, Shunyata Research Theta power cable, Cardas Audio XLR input cable, and custom Acme ceramic fuse. Each element was chosen through extensive listening to push the system toward what professional mixers need to hear.

For engineers tired of cycling through monitors every few years, the V.1 represents a different path: a complete monitoring system designed by people who understand what professional mixing demands, voiced through decades of mastering experience, and built without compromise.

Inside Kingsize Soundlabs with Dave Trumfio

Dave Trumfio has been a fixture in professional recording for nearly four decades—from engineering Chicago house music and Midwest death metal in the late ’80s to producing OK Go, Wilco, My Morning Jacket, and countless indie records that defined the ’90s and 2000s. In our latest video conversation at Kingsize Soundlabs in Los Angeles, Dave shares his journey from Chicago’s burgeoning electronic and indie scenes to building one of LA’s most respected producer studios. Twenty-five years after opening Kingsize LA, Dave recently completed a major studio overhaul with Providence Sound & Vision—replacing his beloved Neve 8068 with an SSL Origin console, curating a “greatest hits” outboard rack, and rethinking what a commercial studio needs to survive in the modern era.
