Lynx Hilo 2: A New Standard in Mastering-Grade Conversion

More than a decade after launching the original Hilo, Lynx Studio Technology has returned with a major update. The new Hilo 2 builds on everything that made the original a favorite and takes it even further.

If you’re unfamiliar with Lynx, their converters rose to prominence after being used on Daft Punk’s Grammy-winning Random Access Memories. That album remains a global reference for audio fidelity. With the Hilo 2, Lynx delivers its most transparent AD/DA conversion to date—and it’s available now for demo at Providence Sound and Vision.

Upgraded Touchscreen, Expanded Control

To start, the Hilo 2 features a brighter, more responsive touchscreen with improved off-axis visibility. No more awkward angles or laggy controls. Instead, you get quick, precise navigation designed for real-world workflows.

As a result, accessing the Hilo 2’s deep feature set is easier than ever. Whether you’re adjusting input levels or setting up complex routing, the updated interface keeps your workflow smooth and efficient.

Custom Filters for Personalized Tone

In addition, Lynx has introduced flexible filter options that let you shape your sound with greater precision. You can choose between linear-phase and minimum-phase filters, with either fast or slow slopes.

Each filter setting is independently assignable to AD and DA stages. This allows you to dial in analog-style warmth on playback while keeping crisp accuracy on capture—or vice versa.

Extensive I/O for Any Studio Setup

Connectivity is another area where the Hilo 2 excels. The rear panel includes:

  • Balanced XLR

  • AES

  • Optical S/PDIF

  • Up to 8 channels of ADAT

There’s even a user-installable expansion slot for USB, Thunderbolt, or Dante. This modularity ensures your interface stays relevant as your studio evolves.

Metering That Matters

The touchscreen isn’t just about navigation. It also hosts advanced metering tools, including:

  • Classic analog-style VU meters

  • A real-time frequency analyzer

  • Calibrated visual feedback for mix-critical decisions

Combined with Lynx’s pristine conversion path, these tools offer confidence during every print, bounce, and playback session.

Designed for Modern Workflows

The Hilo 2 supports 2 analog inputs and 6 outputs, with digital expandability up to 16 channels. A powerful routing matrix and scene memory system allow the unit to adapt across multiple workflows.

It excels in mastering studios, multichannel setups, and mobile rigs alike. For example, traveling engineers can power the unit with a standard video battery, making it ideal for high-quality location recording. Meanwhile, permanent setups benefit from the optional Hilo Rack, which offers clean, professional mounting.

Inside Kingsize Soundlabs with Dave Trumfio

Dave Trumfio has been a fixture in professional recording for nearly four decades—from engineering Chicago house music and Midwest death metal in the late ’80s to producing OK Go, Wilco, My Morning Jacket, and countless indie records that defined the ’90s and 2000s. In our latest video conversation at Kingsize Soundlabs in Los Angeles, Dave shares his journey from Chicago’s burgeoning electronic and indie scenes to building one of LA’s most respected producer studios. Twenty-five years after opening Kingsize LA, Dave recently completed a major studio overhaul with Providence Sound & Vision—replacing his beloved Neve 8068 with an SSL Origin console, curating a “greatest hits” outboard rack, and rethinking what a commercial studio needs to survive in the modern era.

Magic Garden Pro Evolution v.1 – The No-Compromise Monitor Package From Mastering Engineer Brian Lucey

In our latest video conversation, mastering engineer Brian Lucey joins Providence Sound & Vision’s Brian Gross to discuss the Magic Garden Pro Evolution V.1 Studio Monitor Package: a three-year collaboration that challenges conventional thinking about what professional monitoring should deliver.

After 25 years in mastering, Brian Lucey has experienced a consistent pattern: engineers send mixes that don’t quite translate, then hear everything clearly once the master comes back. Brian posits that the issue isn’t skill or sensitivity, but the monitoring.
