SSL Revival 4000 Channel Strip: The Soul Of The ’80s

The SSL Revival 4000 brings the unmistakable sound of early 1980s SSL 4000 Series consoles into a compact 1U channel strip – the same sound that shaped hits from Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, U2, Prince, Metallica, and countless other music legends. Drawing on the revered circuitry of both the legendary B Series and E Series consoles, the Revival 4000 delivers the signature tone and sonic flexibility that form the foundation of SSL’s industry-defining legacy.

A Historic Mic Preamp

At the heart of the Revival 4000 is the classic E Series JT-115K-E Jensen transformer-balanced mic preamp—the exact same Jensen component found in original E Series channel strips. The Jensen transformer imparts that unmistakable SSL character—adding harmonic richness and three-dimensional depth that makes vocals sit perfectly in the mix and instruments occupy their own distinct sonic space. Engineers who have worked on original 4000 E consoles will instantly recognize this preamp’s signature warmth and transparency.

The 4000 B De-Esser

The Revival 4000’s B-Series De-Esser is lifted directly from the original compressor/limiter design of the iconic 4000 B console, delivering a musical 10:1 ratio with a 7 kHz sidechain filter. This enables broadband compression that’s precisely triggered by sibilance, making it ideal for taming harsh vocals, drums, or aggressive sources without the clinical harshness of modern digital de-essers. Its circuit design mirrors the legendary SSL Bus Compressor, adding familiar clarity and character to any signal while maintaining the musical quality that made the B Series console so beloved at Townhouse Studios during those groundbreaking early sessions.

Ultimate Dynamics

The Ultimate 4000 E Series Dynamics section stays completely true to the original channel strip, meticulously replicating the circuitry and components that gave it legendary character. This section features a true RMS sidechain detector and an all-discrete gain reduction stage, identical to the discrete Class A VCA chip used in the original console. Flexible controls let you bypass the soft-knee curve, activate fast attack mode, and choose between logarithmic or linear release curves—offering the wide palette of tonal shaping options that helped craft countless classic records. From subtle glue compression to aggressive pumping effects, this is the dynamics processing that defined an era.

Two Iconic Flavors of EQ

The celebrated 4-band parametric EQ offers two legendary SSL flavors in one strip: the classic 4000 E Brown Knob (02) and the Black Knob (242). The Brown Knob EQ features two fully parametric mid bands with SSL’s signature symmetrical design, ensuring consistent musical intervals regardless of gain or frequency settings—this became the staple sound of early ’80s recordings and mixes. The ‘242’ EQ circuit, developed in 1983 in collaboration with George Martin for AIR Studios, introduced wider cut and boost ranges (±18 dB vs. ±15 dB), refined control response, and a steeper 18 dB/octave high-pass filter, offering tighter low-end control and greater tonal flexibility than its predecessor.

Classic Tone, Modern Workflow

Beyond its legendary circuits, the Revival 4000 includes practical features for contemporary workflows: a dedicated balanced insert point for seamlessly integrating external gear, external sidechain input for creative keying applications, flexible processing order that lets you optimize signal flow, and sidechain linking for stereo operation with paired units. The extensive ‘to sidechain’ functionality allows you to send filters or EQ to the dynamics sidechain, opening up creative compression possibilities that go beyond the original console’s capabilities. Input/output metering, line output trim, and flexible routing options ensure the Revival 4000 integrates seamlessly into any modern studio setup.
