SSL Super 9000 Channel Strip: The Sound Behind Countless Modern Hits

The Super 9000 combines Solid State Logic’s SuperAnalogue technology to deliver the modern SSL sound in a single analog channel strip. It draws from the circuitry and features of the iconic SSL 9000 J and the Duality console, offering ultra-low distortion, punchy dynamics, and exceptional clarity. This channel strip brings the sound of SSL’s flagship consoles into a compact rackmount format.

Renowned studios like Abbey Road, Metropolis, Real World, Record Plant, and Avatar/Power Station adopted the 9000 Series early on. Likewise, top engineers such as Manny Marroquin, Michael Brauer, Kevin Shirley, and Tony Maserati used SuperAnalogue technology to shape genre-defining hits for artists from Led Zeppelin to Jay-Z and Rihanna.

Dual Mic Preamps: Choose Transparency or Harmonic Color

Like SSL’s Duality console, the Super 9000 offers two world-class mic preamp options. First, the SuperAnalogue preamp delivers pristine clarity and massive headroom. Alternatively, you can engage the Variable Harmonic Drive (VHD) circuit to add coloration and texture. VHD gives you the ability to dial in 2nd-order harmonics for tube-like warmth or push toward 3rd-order harmonics for a more aggressive, transistor-like edge.

For added flexibility, the INPUT FLIP function moves the VHD circuit from the mic input to the line input. This makes it easy to add saturation to DAW stems or other line-level sources without changing your patching.

Legendary SSL Dynamics and EQ

The Super 9000 features SSL’s modern dynamics section, built around the high-performance THAT 2181A VCA. It includes a Fast Attack mode and Peak Detect feature first introduced on the SL 9000. These give you enhanced control over fast transients and peak signals.

When it comes to EQ, you get two iconic SSL options. The 292 G-Series “Pink Knob” EQ offers a variable-Q design, ideal for smooth boosts and wide tone shaping. Meanwhile, the 242 E-Series “Black Knob” EQ uses a constant-Q design developed with Sir George Martin. This provides surgical precision for targeted frequency cuts or enhancements.

Smart Routing and Studio Integration

Beyond its classic tone-shaping circuits, the Super 9000 is packed with features for today’s hybrid workflows. There’s a balanced insert point that can be placed either pre or post-EQ and dynamics. You also get an external sidechain input, flexible processing order, and stereo sidechain linking.

Additionally, the INPUT FLIP control allows the line input to run through the mic preamp path, while the mic input gets routed to the line stage. As a result, you can process DAW stems or reamp signals with ease—no manual repatching required.

SuperAnalogue Power in a 1U Rack

The SSL Super 9000 packs the essence of the 9000 Series into a single rack space. From dual preamps and powerful dynamics to iconic EQ and flexible routing, it delivers the clarity and punch that made SSL consoles a studio standard. Whether you’re tracking, mixing, or mastering, the Super 9000 offers the full range of SSL’s sound-shaping capabilities in a modern, compact form.

Inside Kingsize Soundlabs with Dave Trumfio

Dave Trumfio has been a fixture in professional recording for nearly four decades—from engineering Chicago house music and Midwest death metal in the late ’80s to producing OK Go, Wilco, My Morning Jacket, and countless indie records that defined the ’90s and 2000s. In our latest video conversation at Kingsize Soundlabs in Los Angeles, Dave shares his journey from Chicago’s burgeoning electronic and indie scenes to building one of LA’s most respected producer studios. Twenty-five years after opening Kingsize LA, Dave recently completed a major studio overhaul with Providence Sound & Vision—replacing his beloved Neve 8068 with an SSL Origin console, curating a “greatest hits” outboard rack, and rethinking what a commercial studio needs to survive in the modern era.

Magic Garden Pro Evolution v.1 – The No-Compromise Monitor Package From Mastering Engineer Brian Lucey

In our latest video conversation, mastering engineer Brian Lucey joins Providence Sound & Vision’s Brian Gross to discuss the Magic Garden Pro Evolution V.1 Studio Monitor Package: a three-year collaboration that challenges conventional thinking about what professional monitoring should deliver.

After 25 years in mastering, Brian Lucey has experienced a consistent pattern: engineers send mixes that don’t quite translate, then hear everything clearly once the master comes back. Brian posits that the issue isn’t skill or sensitivity, but the monitoring.

Let’s Compare Helios by H2 Audio and Sound Techniques

In our latest video comparison at The Nest Recorder with Grammy-winning engineer Chris Sorem, we explore two British console designs that shaped iconic recordings but have largely disappeared from modern conversations: Helios and Sound Techniques.

These are legends of audio equipment that you’ve heard countless times, but have faded into obscurity. However, they’re back in the hands of loving shepherds and have been revived for the modern recording studio.
